I run make up audits to teach clients how to apply make up correctly, advise them on using the right products and to educate on product maintenance and expiry. (I call it an audit because I ask for clients to bring all their make up and I check for cleanliness, expiry, colour etc)

On an audit I once had with a client, I was shocked to find that one of her lipsticks was 12 years old. She had a bad rash on her face and asked for me to recommend a facialist but after looking at her foundation sponge; I realized the rash was just her skin’s way of telling her to change it!

Most make up products don’t have expiry dates written on them but they do expire. When I ask clients why they don’t throw away their cosmetics, I get answers like ‘I love the shade of this lipstick’, ‘I don’t like my make up bag looking empty’, ‘It was so expensive’ and the list goes on.

You may love the shade of lipstick you’ve kept for over 12 years but will you love the infections you may get from the build up of bacteria?

When it comes to make up, I believe in quality and not quantity. Your make up bag doesn’t have to be so full that the zip almost breaks in trying to close it. As long as you have the right products you need to achieve the look you want, it doesn’t matter if your bag feels empty.

As for not wanting to throw it out because of the cost, isn’t your skin worth using fresh products on? You might need to spend even more money to cure the irritations and/or infections you may get from using expired products.

How can you tell when it’s time to throw it out?

You’ll notice a change in texture. Lipsticks won’t glide on as smoothly as it should and sometimes will break as its being applied. Lipsticks should not be kept for more than 2 years.

Mascara wands will become dry and will have stray hairs stuck on it. Mascara has the shortest life span and should be changed at least every 3 months.

Expired eye shadows and blushers will crumble even when the least pressure is applied on it but they can be kept for up to 3 years. If you use brushes to apply these products, wash them with shampoo bi-monthly and leave it to dry naturally. Don’t blow or towel dry them.

Lip and eye liner pencils can be kept for up to 3 years but should be sharpened regularly.

Tips for keeping your skin clean and your makeup fresh

— Smell your make up; if it has an unusual smell, it may contain bacteria and should be thrown away.
— Always make sure that products are closed tight and stored out of sunlight, as excessive heat can destroy the preservatives.
— Stop using any eye products if you have an eye infection.
— Never add liquids to products unless directed by the manufacturer.
— If there are any changes in color and texture, dispose of the product immediately.
— Avoid sampling makeup at department stores when possible. If you do test, never apply directly from the makeup. Instead, use a clean, disposable applicator (i.e., cotton swab, sponge) to apply cosmetics.
—- Never share make up, especially eye make up as infections are spread really fast

PS – Whenever you go anywhere to get made up, please look at the make up artist’s brushes!!! Love yourself!! Do not let anyone use anything dirty on you. Don’t pay for bacteria!

Sometimes all you need for spring is as beauty look that’s as fresh as the weather is warm. On those days you can forget the heavy black sooty eyeshadow and blood-red lipstick and trade them for the complete opposite: a bright glow of fresh white on the eyes and a burst of pink on the lips.

Here, makeup artist Leonie Karagiannis used a matte white eye shadow and glossy lip colour, though you could add a pencil or eyeshadow with more of a shimmer-factor if you wanted to. The trick is to keep it fresh and clean, though, so nothing too glittery or heavy in texture as it will ruin the effect. Finish the make-up with strong but feminine brows and a rosy glow of blush for a look that’ll work both daytime and evening.

Do It Yourself

Start with a naturally flawless base.

Brush up brows and fill in with matching eyebrow shadow using a fine angle bush in upward strokes. Set with brow gel.

Blend a white pencil along upper mobile lid and then soften by blending with a white eye shadow.

Place white eyeliner along the waterline and continue along lower lash line. Blend and soften edge with a tapered blending brush and white eye shadow.

Finely line upper lash line with black liquid liner to define eyes.

Curl lashes and apply at least 2-3 coats of mascara making sure to separate lashes between coats to avoid clumping.

Apply a hint of pink blush on the apples of the cheeks and highlight the upper planes of the cheek.

Finish the look with a hot pink lip gloss for fresh, understated glamour.
